never grow UP | First Birthday Cake Smash | Delaware Family Photographer

This Never Grow UP, Disney themed first birthday session won the title of Ultimate Cake Smasher. The title of "Ultimate Cake Smasher" was won when she sat on her cake! She was trying to walk away from the balloons and clouds and the cake was in her way. Thankfully mom was close by and able to catch her. She was also really interested in the cake stand as much as the cake itself. All of these little details are what make great pictures of fun memories. If you are considering first birthday photos, keep reading to find out what you need to know about scheduling, outfits and the flow of the session.

Her birthday party had all of the balloons tied to the cutest Little Tikes house with this same cloud backdrop. To say that this little one is loved is a complete understatement! And with a smile like hers, I completely get it!

First birthday sessions are 40 minutes with a theme that you choose. This allows you to have one outfit of your choosing and then a cake smash outfit. Your child can get dressed when they arrive. The first half of the session will be them in their outfit (not the cake smash outfit.) These outfits can be casual, ruffle tutus, shirt and suspender sets, or all the ruffles and lace. The second part of the session will be the cake smash. Families choose anything from a diaper cover and suspenders to all the thrills and frills. These outfits do get messy!

Which brings me to the cake. I highly recommend a light colored cake. White cake or light colors always work well. If you are looking to have bright decor, I recommend that you choose a light color icing with all the bright sprinkles. The reason for this is that icing will leave your little one covered in color for days. Sprinkles and cake toppers are a great way to add the colors that you want without painting or staining your little one. Additionally, if you want to use the outfit for their party you are more likely to be able to get a light colored icing out of the clothing. When we chat about your session we can talk about where to get your cake.

Most families have a theme in mind when they inquire about their session. Decor items that will be used for their party can also be used for their photo session. Items might include high chair banners, 12 months of photos banner, cake topper, hat/crown/bows, pompoms, garland (tassel, dot, etc.), favorite stuffed animal, etc. I also offer a variety of neutral backdrops and cake stands for your use. Yes, a theme of simple is also an option.

Please, please be sure to reach out two months before your little one's birthday session! There are a couple of reasons for this. First if you need a weekend session, those times always fill first with weddings and families. Second little ones get sick and so do their families. This means that we need to reschedule sometimes. I always, knock on wood, have time to reschedule due to illness. My contract also reads that I will deliver your complete gallery in 2-3 weeks. Each family is different in how they want to use their photos from this session. Some families will display these photos at their party and others want them for the keepsake. Thinking about how you will use these photos will be helpful in our scheduling.
