As a central Delaware family and wedding photographer, Jackie and Evan were first photographed with Shannon Ritter for their engagement session at Brecknock Park. From there I photographed their pregnancy announcement, then this Cape Henlopen maternity session. I was hired for their newborn photos which we did in their home. This fall they asked me again to photograph their sweet family of three. From the excitement of their engagement session to the glow of their maternity photo shoot and beyond, they are now friends.

A Walk Down Memory Lane: Jackie and Evan’s Engagement Session (click to see) A few years ago, I met Jackie and Evan for their dreamy engagement photos which do not look like Brecknock Park. We then did their pregnancy announcement photograph session. We traveled to Cape Henlopen for their maternity session. Not much later, I was in their home two weeks after their baby was born for a 2 hour newborn portrait session. And now, their fall family portrait session.

Mom and dad are looking at each other on historic property in Dover, Delaware while walking down a white stone path in a green field. Mom is holding baby on her hip.
Dad is holding his daughter on his belly while the baby looks over his shoulder. Dad is kissing her temple with a tree faintly behind them.
Mom wearing a spagetting string denim dress is resting her cheek on her daughters head. The daughter has her hand in her mouth while she sits on her mothers lap. The hand in the little girls mouth makes her cheek overlap her hand. The little ones brown eyes are looking straight into the camera Shannon Ritter Photography is holding.

Photography is more than just snapping pictures; it’s about preserving memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. It's about the removal of distraction (during editing) that makes your photos "portrait quality." Their feet size, the cheeks, their favorite toy, the tiny teeth poking through, the calmness of your parenting is what I see in your photographs.

Mom and dad are sitting on a white blanket with their little girl (younger than one month) sits on the blanket between them. Mom and dad have their foreheads together while the little girl chews on her Sophie the giraffe.
You can see dads green shirt and his daughters single little foot that is on the side of dads hip. The camera is above dad shoulder to give the perspective of looking down at the foot.
Dad is holding his little girl in front of him while she is positioned looking towards the camera. The girl has her finger in her mouth which signifies that she is teething. She is wearing a purple onsie with ruffled sleeves.
Mom is sitting on white blanket in the middle of a brick circle. The camera is looking down over moms shoulder to her daughter. The daughter is looking up towards mom which shows her ruffled sleeve and mom's profile looking at her.

Mom is holding baby on her stomach in front of a green door. The baby is smiling towards the camera and two small teeth are showing from her smile. Mom is looking down at her little girl.
Mom is holding her baby on her hip. Baby is looking towards the camera and mom is looking down at baby. There is a wooden building in the distance behind them. The little girl has a smirk of happiness on her face.
Little girl is sitting on a white blanket while the mom and dad each hold one end. The parents have just let the sides of the blanket down and the baby is looking up towards dad who is closest to the camera.
Black and white photograph of parents sitting on steps with the baby on dads lap between them. Mom is smooching her daughters hair and baby has the biggest smile.
Mom and dad are sitting on yellow historic steps with a green front door behind them. The little girl is sitting on dad's lap and both mom and dad are looking down at baby. The family is small on the steps showing the large door and part of the building behind them.

Mom cuddling on dads back while dad lifts little one above his head. Baby has her fingers in her mouth.
Mom and dad standing on the porch of a historic brick building. The family is centered on the green door. Mom is holding baby on her stomach and dads stomach is touching baby while holding onto mom.
Baby girl sitting in grass with white blanket behind her. Baby is smiling and not showing her teeth.
Mom is in denim dress sitting next to dad in green shirt on yellow wooden steps. Baby girl is sitting in a purple onsie with ruffled sleeves while looking towards the photographer.

Wondering how I got these adorable photographs?

I am a former teacher! A photographer who understands child development doesn’t expect toddlers to sit still, preschoolers to follow long directions, or teenagers to pretend they’re someone they’re not. Instead, I build sessions around what children are naturally capable of at each stage. That knowledge allows the session to flow without pressure, power struggles, or unrealistic expectations.

Black and white photo of mom and dad walking in a field. Dad is leaning over to kiss his wife who is holding their 9 month old baby. Baby is looking at the camera with just her thumb in her mouth with a smile.

Understanding child development also means knowing when to lean in and when to step back. A skilled photographer can recognize when a child needs movement instead of stillness, autonomy instead of instruction, or connection instead of correction. She may turn a toddler’s need to explore into a walking adventure, give a shy child space to warm up without forcing interaction, or meet a teenager with humor and respect rather than forced posing. These choices aren’t accidental—they’re informed by experience and awareness. The result is a session that feels less like a performance and more like real life unfolding in front of the camera.
